Kia Forte saloon shown in design sketches US-oriented family saloon could preview the look of the new Ceed, due in the UK later this year

Kia has shown design sketches of its upcoming Forte saloon ahead of its Detroit motor show debut.

The car, which will likely give us a good flavour of how the 2018 Ceed will look, appears to be inspired by the larger Stinger, with swept-back headlights and large air intakes contributing to a sportier appearance than today's car.

Wide wheel arches are filled by large alloy wheels, although these are certain to be scaled back for production.

The rear of the car has intricate LED taillights with black details incorporating the lower reflectors. Peter Schreyer's design influence is clear to see, with an Audi-like aesthetic across the car's back end. A strip connects the taillights, as previously seen on the Sportage and Stinger.

Kia UK couldn't confirm if the model's look will directly influence the Ceed, but with some shared parts and platform elements, the cars will share more than a badge, and being of a similar size, will be similarly styled at the front, at least.

Kia's Ceed, where before just a hatchback and estate, will grow into a full model family for the car's next generation, with the five-door hatchback and estate remaining, but the three-door Proceed hatch replaced with a shooting brake, and an SUV variant on the way too. The Forte, a saloon, won't go on sale in the UK.

GT models will remain in the lineup, as less hardcore alternatives to Hyundai's performance-oriented N-branded models
