Lexus previews flagship SUV with Detroit-bound LF-1 Limitless concept

LF-1 Limitless features a coupé-like roofline and rear light bar and is said to be a completely new niche

Lexus has previewed a large SUV coupé model ahead of its Detroit motor show reveal early next year.

The LF-1 Limitless concept takes the form of a high-riding SUV with a steeply raked rear screen, suggesting a coupé-like roofline.

Screens in the back show a conventional seating layout, while a glimpse at a screen in the front confirms that the car is at least a two-row SUV.

Lexus describes the concept as a flagship model, suggesting that the car, in production terms, would be an SUV coupé sitting above the range-topping RX, much like the positioning of the Audi Q8 in comparison with the Q7

Little of the car's design is revealed aside from the roofline, a split roof spoiler and a rear light bar. The car does appear to depart from Lexus' current design language, which uses lots of angles and lines for a crisp – if divisive – look. The LF-1 Limitless appears softer and more rounded than any models in the brand's existing line-up.

The concept was designed by a California-based team of Lexus designers and is claimed to "redefine the boundaries of luxury", suggesting a considerably more high-end approach than the premium offerings currently produced by the brand.
