Get To Know the Piston Rings

As the name suggests, the piston ring is a ring of metal affixed to a piston engine. In a car engine four-stroke, piston ring system is responsible for insulating the combustion chamber and its contents from the rest of the machine, as well as regulating the circulation and consumption of oil.

On simple two-stroke engines, as found on the motorcycle and scooter piston ring does not regulate the circulation of oil because oil lubrication is provided by a mixed directly with the fuel. In either case, piston ring plays an important role in the smooth operation of the machine.

In General, four-stroke engine has a three ring circuits are used per piston. Piston rings are not completely surrounds the piston, but otherwise each open, so that it can compress when installed in the cylinder, to ensure a seal.

But not all of them perform the same function. In order from top to bottom on the piston head is the compression ring, ring and oil control windshield wipers. Each usually made of iron or steel, but they are different shaped and features a unique design.


The main function of the ring is the ring compression, especially as a seal which keeps the mixture of fuel and air in the combustion chamber so as not to flow into other parts of the machine. In the most visible part, the compression ring can be seen as a rectangle or keystone.

In the middle of the ring, the wiper is designed with a tapered edge tilted down to lubricate the cylinder walls, and excess oil directly to the crankcase. Finally, the oil control rings, which usually consists of two thin Rails, combining and drill holes that allow water to pass through the oils.


From all parts of the machine that experience a piston ring wear, is the most constantly depressed. With a piston engine it acts as the tip moves from the combustion chamber, the pressure of each ignition must contain a ring. Although a layer resistant to wear and maintenance, piston rings are prone to wear and tear in normal usage though.


If the piston ring has been worn out, unwanted behavior can affect engine performance. Oil and fuel that were previously separate can be mixed, causing pressure to occur in the crankcase dilute the oil and gasoline. In addition, the oil into fuel can burn; causing car exhaust system emits a blue smoke.

Eventually, the wear of the piston ring can negatively impact compression of machine, causing the fuel wasted, excessive oil consumption, and decreased power of the machine.
