Infiniti prepares electric Q inspiration concept for Detroit motor show Autonomy and electric powertrains are hinted at; new image reveals a Kia Stinger-like shape

Infiniti has confirmed its electric sports saloon concept for the Detroit motor show later in January, with a second preview image revealing some of the car's styling.

The concept's name has also been confirmed as the Q Inspiration concept. Design boss Alfonso Albaisa previously confirmed to Autocar that the car will be a pure electric model in its own right, rather than an electric variant of an existing car.

Previewing the brand's next-generation design language, the car's grille is solid, further confirming its electric powertrain. Deep slashes in the car's bonnet suggest that the aggressive design from its current range is not set to soften for the next generation.

"Our Detroit concept car heralds a new generation of Infiniti. A seamless and stunning new design philosophy demonstrating Infiniti artistry in the new age of autonomy and breakthrough drivetrains," said Albaisa.

Executive design director Karim Habib explained that the car will take the form of a traditional saloon car, but with tweaks to its formula. This was due to "smarter, more compact and less intrusive powertrains," he explained.

The car sits on a new platform, and will not share this with the Nissan Leaf. The production version of the EV is expected to go on sale in 2019, alongside a raft of EVs from across the industry.

The electric saloon will use elements of Infiniti's Prototype 9 concept from 2017's Monterey car week, Albaisa explained. It's likely to take a far more conventional form than the retro racer-inspired Prototype 9, however.
