Mazda exec will get a 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with comparable torque to a V8, but it won't be available in the UK
The Mazda 6 will be updated for 2018 with revised styling and a new range-topping engine.
Design tweaks bring the saloon into line with the CX-5 SUV, with a simplified front end that sticks to Mazda's uncomplicated Kodo design strategy.
A new 2.5-litre turbocharged Skyactiv-G petrol engine has been added. This features cylinder shut-off technology for greater fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
Mazda claims that this engine's torque is comparable to that of a 4.0-litre V8 engine, although stops short of quantifying the claim with a figure. It's unlikely that this engine will make it into UK cars, as it's currently offered only in the US-only CX-9 large SUV.
The 6's updated interior features more upmarket materials, Mazda claims, with sen wood trim giving a nod to traditional Japanese furniture.
Technology updates include an upgrade to the car's adaptive cruise control, which can now bring the car to a stop. There are also updated safety sensors and an around-view monitor for parking.
A Mazda spokesman confirmed that a UK-spec 6 will be shown closer to the car's on-sale date in 2018, although it's not yet known when and where this will be.
